Nautilus Minerals’ Environmental Impact Statement
In September 2008, Nautilus Minerals Niugini Limited (Nautilus) submitted its Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to the Papua New Guinea Government. It was accepted by our Government for review on November 6, 2008.
To the credit of Nautilus, they have made the document public (as they should) via their webiste. More specificly, the Nautilus CARES website, or as a friend of mine termed it – “their propoganda/spin-doctor” website. To find the Nautilus CARES website click here. And yes, in case you’re wondering, CARES is an acronym which stands for Community Accountable Responsible Environmentally, and Safe.
Doesn’t that just make you feel a whole lot better? Nautilus “CARES” – I seem to remember BHP saying something similar about Ok Tedi before they wiped their hands clean of the carnage they funded.
I just printed off Nautilus’ Environmental Impact Statement and will read it over the next couple of weeks. I’d encourage all of you to do the same for the simple fact that as their underwater mining project continues – you will really understand what is going on. To download Nautilus’ EIS click here.
Isn’t it just a little bit ironic that Nautilus states under its EIS: “Please consider the environment before printing this document“? (If you click the above link to their EIS you will see what I mean).
