PNG Election 2012 Candidate Statistics

A record number of 3,435 candidates have nominated to contest the 2012 general election, which is 676 more than in the 2007 national election, and which also includes 135 women.

This is the highest number of candidates to contest a national general election since PNG’s first election in 1977. A total of 2,759 candidates nominated to contest the election in 2007 and 2,910 nominated in 2002.

Out of the total of 3,435 candidates, a new record number of 135 women nominated, compared with 101 in 2007.

Southern Region registered the highest number of female candidates with 56; followed by Momase with 30; Highlands 27 and New Guinea Islands with 22. Of the 22 provinces, Enga is the only province which will not field a female candidate.

Highlands Region has the most number of candidates with 1,388; followed by Southern Region with 986; Momase 824 and New Guinea Islands with 328.

  1. Thanks for your latest list. When will Electoral Commission make names of all candidates available?

    • ‘Arthur’ – good question. Unfortunately, I can’t help you here. Some of us have had enough of waiting around for the PNGEC to do so. It’s not that hard is it?

      • Yes, can’t be that hard – and with only 10 days till polling! Twice during the weekend the Commission’s website seemed to be “down”.
